Young Friends of Point Blue

Who we are

Young people know that human-driven global climate change is shifting everything, everywhere – and are determined to do something about it. The Young Friends of Point Blue come together to support Point Blue’s mission, vision, passion, and science to help make positive conservation outcomes possible for a healthy blue planet. Through virtual and in-person connections, the Young Friends learn about, visit, and amplify Point Blue’s work from the Sierra Nevada to the California Current, and from Alaska to Antarctica.

In this growing, inclusive network of young people, we turn climate anxiety into action. The Young Friends connect with Point Blue scientists and educators who are working to answer climate-smart conservation questions daily. Questions such as: How is ocean temperature affecting the food supply in the ocean? How are migratory birds changing their timing and patterns in relation to changing plant flowering and seeding? How can we engage school children, community-serving organizations, environmental justice groups, and tribal nations to restore habitat for wildlife, flood protections along shorelines, cultural preservation, and reduced soil erosion and improved water quality on streams and rivers?

There are myriad ways to engage with and support Point Blue’s mission and each member of the Young Friends can do so in a way that works for them. Your help to expand our network, harness new technologies, push out Point Blue’s groundbreaking scientific insights, elevate diverse voices, and raise vital financial support is mission critical.

“We first got involved with Point Blue by joining the newly formed Young Friends of Point Blue–a fun, dynamic group of professionals interested in learning about and supporting conservation efforts. We love Point Blue’s focus on putting conservation science into action, especially by engaging young people–from students planting native vegetation to apprentices monitoring bird populations throughout California. We have a little farm and are working on multiple tree planting and wildlife conservation projects. We both love hiking and diving and want to preserve the precious wilderness for the future. These personal endeavors and passions naturally drew us to collaborate with and support Point Blue.”

Young Friends Presidio Mixer
Hosted by Geoff Gordon-Creed and Jean Fraser in San Francisco

From the Presidio to the Farallon Islands, Point Blue’s work in San Francisco guides the conservation of wildlife from the most rugged preserve to the most urban. Join Point Blue scientists, Young Friends, and Board members to hear more about these keystone datasets that we build over decades with our close partners at the Presidio Trust and the US Fish & Wildlife Service. A winter walk through the Presidio will be followed by a reception. RSVP to youngfriends@pointblue.org, directions and details will be sent to registrants

Young Friends of Point Blue Bird for a Cause!
Hosted by Lucy Stevenot and Christina Burnham in Petaluma

The Hawaiian Honeypeepers, the official team of the Young Friends of Point Blue, had an epic birding adventure with captains Lucy Stevenot and Christina Burnham as part of Point Blue’s 46th Annual Rich Stallcup Bird-A-Thon! This legendary birding showdown might be older than us, but it’s still the coolest way to hang out and share our love for wildlife. We rocked our best Aloha gear, and bookended our birding with an eggs and bacon breakfast and a wood-fired pizza lunch!

Dusk Owl Hike and Reception
Point Blue Avian Ecologist Renée Cormier led a dusk walk on Mount Tamalpais to listen for local owl species of Marin County, and talk about Point Blue’s long-term work with the iconic Northern Spotted Owl. A reception followed.

Dubai Debrief
COP28 is just one way Point Blue engages on the global stage. In this debrief, Young Friends Abdullah Al-Shakarchi and Grace Lam joined a wider panel of Point Blue partners who attended. The panel provided insights into the themes and outcomes of the conference and how Point Blue’s observer status helps the organization achieve its mission.

September 16, 2023
Young Friends Mixer and Ranch Walk
The Young Friends mixed it up with Point Blue scientists, staff and Board members on a hike around Stubbs Vineyard, long-time conservation partners. Chelsea Carey led a soils group, John Parodi toured STRAW restoration sites and Diana Humple guided a birding group, all demonstrating the many ways working land and partnerships are essential to any effort to conserve biodiversity. The hike was followed by a toast with Stubbs wines, of course!
