As a conservation organization, we need to engage more people in solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss. We need to employ new creative approaches in order to increase the pace and scale of change needed to shift course towards a healthy future for all. Art is an effective way to communicate, formulate, and engage in solutions.

Our vision for the art and science partnerships we form is that, as a result of these efforts, the world will become a more inspiring and healthy place for all living organisms. We will see more vibrant, inclusive, and effective conservation solutions blossom and ripple out locally, nationally, and globally. We will see greater understanding and action to address the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Our Guiding Framework

Point Blue Conservation Science wishes and intends to proactively and reactively engage with artists in projects/pieces/events that promote and communicate conservation work in ever-evolving, impactful ways. This framework outlines the why, what, who, and how.

Through art and science collaborations, we seek to increase the number of people who:

  • understand the value of nature and their relationship to it,
  • know the challenges we face when nature is destroyed or threatened, and
  • are actively participating in solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss.

We also seek to increase the depth of understanding and the impact of climate and biodiversity solutions.

Conservation Art & Science Advisory Committee

Are you an artist with a mission to address climate change, protect or celebrate nature, or support conservation of ecosystems? You may want to join our Conservation Art & Science Advisory Committee or Network.

Committee members provide support to staff and board at Point Blue in areas of strategic guidance, networking and resource connections, and art world expertise. Members commit to a 3 year engagement with possibility to renew. The Committee meets as needed with an average of 2-3 times per year.

Network members stay in touch via email communication and are invited to provide feedback on specific projects and attend Committee/Point Blue Art & Science events.

There are currently about 30 members on our committee and in our network that include author Amy Tan, nature artist and educator John Muir Laws, bird and nature artist Keith Hansen, and other nature journalers, art curators, musicians, visual artists, and poets.

Art & Science Partnerships

We proactively engage with artists as well as say yes to collaborations when artists reach out to us. We look for and say yes to projects that support shared goals of ecosystem restoration, species and habitat protection, community engagement in solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss, and more.

Explore past and current projects below and reach out if you are interested in collaborating, funding collaborations, or learning more.

San Francisco Bay Tidal Marsh Metal and Enamel Pin Series

Jordan Ma of Observation Society and Point Blue Conservation Science are thrilled to announce the launch of a six-species tidal marsh restoration enamel pin series! Each species represents a key species within San Francisco Bay’s tidal marsh ecosystem. Our shared hope is that these pins will ignite more Bay Area public engagement in the magic, wonder, and benefit of this integral habitat around our beloved bay. We hope it spurs public pride in protecting these species and widespread support for restoration of their home.

One dollar from the sale of each pin will be donated to support Point Blue’s conservation and restoration efforts around the Bay and beyond.

A Different Kind of Field Guide

Artist Christopher Reiger contributes a percentage of every art sale to nonprofit organizations that are working to redress environmental and social ails. By generating money for important causes through the sale of his artwork, he can act in proxy; the long hours in the studio can be connected to the spirit of the art and to the greater community. This charitable sales model is a concrete metaphor for the emotional and intellectual sustenance provided by the artwork itself. Whenever artwork is purchased, whether directly from the artist or through a gallery or other third party, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the funds received by Christopher is made to a nonprofit organization working to tackle environmental or social challenges.

Christopher chooses a different non-profit to contribute to each month and has chosen Point Blue several times.

Birds of Palomarin

After about five months of work, Larissa Babicz, former Point Blue Apprentice, completed Birds of Palomarin, a drawing showing all 78 bird species that were caught, documented, and released back into the wild last year during her 2022 spring/summer field research season at the Palomarin Field Station. It spans February through October, so includes some of spring migration, some of fall migration, and the full nesting season.
