Director, California Current Group
As Director of the California Current Group at Point Blue Conservation Science, I lead efforts to accelerate climate-smart ocean conservation through applied science, policy engagement, and partnerships. My work is driven by a deep commitment to developing science-based tools that enhance fisheries sustainability, inform ocean zoning, and build broad support for marine conservation.
I have the privilege of overseeing a team of 17 dedicated staff, coordinating research with 20–25 seasonal volunteers and 6–10 graduate students each year. Through collaboration with federal and state agencies, academia, and NGOs, I help translate scientific insights into actionable solutions that protect ocean ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. I also serve as a science advisor to multiple agencies and organizations, providing expertise on marine ecosystem management, climate resilience, and sustainable ocean use.
My team takes a Connected Conservation approach—bridging applied science, community engagement, and policy—to enhance ocean resilience, support sustainable fisheries, and protect marine wildlife from climate-driven threats. The ocean is inherently interconnected—across habitats, species, and human communities—so our conservation strategies must reflect that. By leveraging decades of data from the Farallon Islands and the Applied California Current Ecosystem Studies (ACCESS), we uncover critical trends in ocean productivity, climate variability, and ecosystem health. These long-term insights, combined with emerging technologies and conservation strategies, inform adaptive management, marine spatial planning, and fisheries policies that promote a thriving, sustainable ocean.
With over three decades of experience, I have led field research from Peru to Antarctica, Alaska, and California, focusing on seabird foraging ecology, whale habitat modeling, and climate change impacts on marine food webs. My academic journey began with a BS in Biology from Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (1992) and culminated in a PhD in Biological Sciences from University of California Irvine (2004).
Beyond conservation leadership, I serve as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biology at San Francisco State University, working closely with PIs at the Estuary & Ocean Science Center to mentor students and advance marine science education. Teaching and mentoring future conservationists is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
Born and raised in Peru, I carry a lifelong passion for the ocean and a strong commitment to fostering equity in marine conservation. My work bridges science and policy to ensure long-term stewardship of the California Current and beyond.
When I’m not working from my home office in Santa Rosa, CA, or our headquarters in Petaluma, I enjoy spending time outdoors with my husband, son, and dog—preferably by the ocean, though I’m just as happy by a river or lake, soaking in the natural world that fuels my passion for conservation.
