Coastal Program Biologist

As a Coastal Program Biologist for the California Current Group at Point Blue, my work involves research and monitoring of the Western snowy plover on Vandenberg Space Force Base, CA. After joining Point Blue in 2009 as a volunteer Coastal Seabird Intern, I assisted with the California Least Tern Project, seabird breeding and population dynamics field studies. These opportunities allowed me to develop essential knowledge and skills that led to my current position, and also change the trajectory of my professional path to a career in conservation science.

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Science from Oregon State University with coursework emphasis in ecology and conservation. Prior to coming to Point Blue, I spent a fulfilling twenty years in the medical field while simultaneously raising twin sons. Along this journey, I became cognizant of my strong desire to redirect my professional life toward a career devoted to preserving the natural world. I have a keen interest in biodiversity conservation and avian ecology, both of which will continue to drive my future professional and academic pursuits.

Growing up on the east coast, my passion for wildlife was sparked at an early age through childhood adventures meandering woodlands and wetlands around the Walden Pond area of Concord, MA. This fortunate early life experience shaped my respect for nature and intensified my desire to conserve healthy ecosystems for future generations. As stated by Henry David Thoreau, “In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World”. After moving to California as a teenager, marine and coastal ecosystems became the focus of my conservation interests.

As a life-long advocate for health and fitness, outside of the field season I enjoy Pilates, yoga, hiking, and birding. My family and I also love camping excursions, or traveling in search of quiet places, more birds, and always more fascinating natural beauty!
