Point Blue is proud to be part of the California Global Biodiversity Working Group (CGBWG), a diverse network of state agencies, elected officials, non-profit organizations, and community groups. Together, the CGBWG is working to ensure California’s strong participation in the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity and the ambitious Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted in 2022 during the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15). This framework aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 through ecosystem protection, restoration of degraded areas, and sustainable resource use, while ensuring equitable benefits for all people. Point Blue is also part of the California Biodiversity Network, which helps support California’s 30×30 and biodiversity, climate, and access goals statewide.

COP16

From October 21 to November 1, 2024, Point Blue team members will attend the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP16) in Cali, Colombia. With just six years left to meet these critical targets, our key priorities include:

Strengthening Subnational Leadership: Highlighting California’s vital role in bridging local and global biodiversity efforts.

Monitoring Progress: Contributing to data collection, analysis, and tracking of the Global Biodiversity Framework’s ambitious targets.

Securing Increased Funding: Advocating for increased funding to ensure equitable resource distribution and scalable initiatives.

Community Engagement: Promoting a connected conservation approach that actively involves local communities and grassroots organizations, while sharing insights and learning from others to ensure conservation benefits reach everyone.

Point Blue is committed to advancing the Global Biodiversity Framework targets and COP16 objectives through an integrated strategy of science, monitoring, research, partnerships, and restoration. By prioritizing equity and linking global initiatives to local actions, we aim to protect biodiversity and create a sustainable future for both nature and people.
